Queensland Aged Care Guide

Aged Care in Queensland — A Snapshot

Queensland follows the same national aged care framework as the rest of Australia, but the experience of arranging care can vary significantly depending on location, service availability and accommodation pricing.

Coastal demand

Capacity is heavily concentrated around Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns.

Regional distance

Families outside the metro coast may face fewer providers, longer travel and more limited workforce availability.

Pricing variation

Accommodation costs can vary widely between prime coastal areas and regional Queensland communities.

Local planning matters: There is no single “Queensland answer” to aged care. What works for a family in Bulimba may not suit a family in Charters Towers.
First Steps

Getting Started in Queensland

If you are at the beginning of the aged care journey, the practical sequence in Queensland is the same as elsewhere in Australia: register with My Aged Care, arrange an assessment, then compare suitable care options before choosing a provider.

1

Register with My Aged Care

My Aged Care is the national entry point for government-subsidised aged care. Families can register online or by calling 1800 200 422.

2

Arrange an assessment

A Regional Assessment Service (RAS) assessment is required for seniors seeking entry-level, basic home support. For individuals with more complex, higher-needs requirements—including comprehensive home care packages or residential aged care—an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment is required.

3

Understand your options

The assessment confirms eligibility, but it does not tell you which provider is best, what it should cost, or how to fund care sensibly.

Queensland Costs

The Cost of Aged Care in Queensland

Aged care fee structures are set nationally, but accommodation prices can vary significantly across Queensland. The RAD or DAP for a particular room depends on the provider, location, building quality and demand.

Inner Brisbane & beachfront Gold Coast

$550k–$850k+

Premium locations and newer or refurbished homes can carry higher accommodation prices.

Greater Brisbane & coastal SEQ

$400k–$600k

Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and non-beachfront Gold Coast homes often fall in this range.

Regional centres

$250k–$450k

Toowoomba, Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton, Mackay and Bundaberg vary widely by provider.

Smaller regional communities

Often lower

Some residents may be fully government-supported, depending on their assessment and circumstances.

Important: These are general ranges only and change frequently. Always confirm current pricing with the individual provider before signing. For a full fee explainer, see our Aged Care Fees & Costs Guide.
Care Pathways

Home Care or Residential Care?

Many Queensland families begin by trying to keep a parent or partner at home for as long as possible. Home care can preserve familiar routines, social connections and the home environment, particularly where the person is still safe with the right level of support.

As health needs increase, residential care may become the safer and more practical option. Aged care is rarely one decision — it is usually a sequence of decisions made over months or years.

For Queensland families, location can add another layer. Adult children may live interstate while a parent lives on the coast or in regional Queensland, making the choice between staying local or moving closer to family a very real planning issue.

Regional Planning

Regional Queensland Considerations

Queensland is a large state, and scale matters when aged care decisions are involved. Service availability is concentrated along the coast and in larger inland centres, which can create practical issues for regional and remote families.

Fewer nearby providers

Some communities may have only one or two residential aged care homes within a reasonable drive.

Longer waits

Assessment and package availability can be more limited in regional areas, especially during peak periods.

Workforce limits

Home care providers may cover broad regions but have limited staff availability to increase services quickly.

Family distance

Adult children in Brisbane or interstate may need to weigh local care against moving closer to family support.

The goal is not to rush: Regional issues are not reasons to avoid aged care in Queensland. They are reasons to plan earlier and compare the whole picture before defaulting to the nearest option.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Queensland Families

Is aged care in Queensland more expensive than in other states?
Not as a system — aged care fees are set nationally. What varies is the price of accommodation in a particular home, which is determined by the provider and location. Coastal South-East Queensland and prime Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast locations often carry higher RAD prices than regional Queensland.
My parent lives in regional Queensland and I live in Brisbane. What should we do?
Start with the assessment process through My Aged Care. From there, compare the practical options: staying local, increasing home support, moving into residential care locally, or moving closer to family. The right answer depends on health, support networks, finances and provider availability.
We are on the Gold Coast. Will selling the family home affect aged care fees?
Yes, it can. Selling the home may convert a partially assessed asset into a financial asset, which can affect aged care fees and pension outcomes. It is usually worth modelling the alternatives before deciding whether to sell, retain or rent the home.
How long does it take to arrange aged care in Queensland?
Timing varies by urgency, location and type of care. Home care can take weeks or longer depending on package availability. Residential care placement can sometimes occur quickly after ACAT approval, but suitable room availability differs by region and provider.
Can Senior Care Assist work with us if we are not in South-East Queensland?
Yes. We work statewide and most of our advisory work is completed by phone and video. The aged care framework is national, but we help families apply it to the Queensland region they are dealing with.
Australia-Wide Guidance

We also work with families in New South Wales and Victoria — same advisory approach, locally relevant guidance and support tailored to each state’s aged care pathways and provider landscape.
