Queensland follows the same national aged care framework as the rest of Australia, but the experience of arranging care can vary significantly depending on location, service availability and accommodation pricing.
Capacity is heavily concentrated around Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns.
Families outside the metro coast may face fewer providers, longer travel and more limited workforce availability.
Accommodation costs can vary widely between prime coastal areas and regional Queensland communities.
If you are at the beginning of the aged care journey, the practical sequence in Queensland is the same as elsewhere in Australia: register with My Aged Care, arrange an assessment, then compare suitable care options before choosing a provider.
My Aged Care is the national entry point for government-subsidised aged care. Families can register online or by calling 1800 200 422.
A Regional Assessment Service (RAS) assessment is required for seniors seeking entry-level, basic home support. For individuals with more complex, higher-needs requirements—including comprehensive home care packages or residential aged care—an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment is required.
The assessment confirms eligibility, but it does not tell you which provider is best, what it should cost, or how to fund care sensibly.
Aged care fee structures are set nationally, but accommodation prices can vary significantly across Queensland. The RAD or DAP for a particular room depends on the provider, location, building quality and demand.
Premium locations and newer or refurbished homes can carry higher accommodation prices.
Greater Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and non-beachfront Gold Coast homes often fall in this range.
Toowoomba, Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton, Mackay and Bundaberg vary widely by provider.
Some residents may be fully government-supported, depending on their assessment and circumstances.
Many Queensland families begin by trying to keep a parent or partner at home for as long as possible. Home care can preserve familiar routines, social connections and the home environment, particularly where the person is still safe with the right level of support.
As health needs increase, residential care may become the safer and more practical option. Aged care is rarely one decision — it is usually a sequence of decisions made over months or years.
For Queensland families, location can add another layer. Adult children may live interstate while a parent lives on the coast or in regional Queensland, making the choice between staying local or moving closer to family a very real planning issue.
Queensland is a large state, and scale matters when aged care decisions are involved. Service availability is concentrated along the coast and in larger inland centres, which can create practical issues for regional and remote families.
Some communities may have only one or two residential aged care homes within a reasonable drive.
Assessment and package availability can be more limited in regional areas, especially during peak periods.
Home care providers may cover broad regions but have limited staff availability to increase services quickly.
Adult children in Brisbane or interstate may need to weigh local care against moving closer to family support.

Senior Care Assist is based on the Gold Coast and works with families across Queensland. Our role is practical: we help families understand options, compare providers and make financial decisions with clarity.
That usually includes placement guidance, aged care financial advice and coordination through the process — from My Aged Care registration and ACAT assessment through to accommodation agreements and fee decisions.
Distance is rarely a barrier. Much of our work is completed by phone, video and email, with in-person consultations available on the Gold Coast.
If a family member is being discharged from hospital and you need to secure aged care quickly, we can move fast.
We regularly assist Queensland families facing 48 to 72 hour timelines — helping compare facilities, manage paperwork and liaise with providers to secure suitable care.

Use our aged care cost calculator to test likely daily costs, compare RAD and DAP scenarios, and understand how different decisions may affect cashflow.
We also work with families in New South Wales and Victoria — same advisory approach, locally relevant guidance and support tailored to each state’s aged care pathways and provider landscape.
Aged care decisions affect cashflow, the family home, pension entitlements and long-term family outcomes. Before signing agreements or making large financial commitments, it is worth understanding the numbers — and the alternatives — clearly.
